Focus on challenges in reporting during COVID-19

In what were exceptionally difficult times, journalists everywhere were faced with extraordinary challenges while going about their jobs – meeting people, being on the spot as events unfold, taking pictures, etc. Reporting on the coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic accurately and safely became the biggest challenge. To discuss the situation and throw some light on how some of the difficulties could be overcome, the Press Institute of India and UNICEF collaborated with the Mar Ivanios College in Thiruvanathapuram in August on a webinar titled ‘Challenges in news reporting during COVID-19’.

Senior journalist Sudha Umashankar and veteran photojournalist D. Krishnan spoke about some of the challenges and how they could be overcome, recalling some instances from their years of experience. Sashi Nair, director-editor, PII-RIND, chipped in with inputs and moderated. S.R. Sanjeev, head of the Journalism Department, Mar Ivanios College, and Sugata Roy, communication specialist, UNICEF (Tamil Nadu & Kerala) participated. The panel later fielded questions from the journalism students. The webinar was streamed live on the PII-RIND Facebook page and the video is present on the PII RIND YouTube channel.
