Best Practices in Newspaper Production was the subject of a RIND seminar conducted on November 24 at PII-RIND. Providing “the big picture about the state of printing industry worldwide, Prabhu Natrajan, research engineer, WAN-IFRA South Asia, spoke about trust being the new currency, the shift in focus (by newspapers) to the local community, and the push-back against ad technology and duopoly (Facebook and Google).

P.G. Viswanathan, manager – Production, The Hindu, made a presentation on newsprint handling and waste management, efficient way of storage and handling, storage area requirements, and waste reduction and management.

V.S. Narayanan, general manager – Technical, Dinamalar, dwelt at length on effective maintenance and SOPs in a printing press, backed with pictures.

Julian Felix, plant head, The Times of India, Chennai, addressed the issue of “responsible printing” – green practices to avoid waste, pollution and carbon emission. He also provided instances of how The Times of India has successfully adopted eco-friendly initiatives in print production.

Executives from Ananda Vikatan, Dinamalar, Malayala Manorama, The New Indian Express, The Hindu and The Times of India attended.

Sashi Nair, director, PII-RIND, welcomed the gathering and moderated the programme.
