The Centre for Asia Studies and the Press Institute of India organised in November a discussion titled: Palk Bay: Contested Territory or Common Heritage – Thinking Out of the Box. Based on a paper authored by Prof V. Suryanarayan, founding director, Centre for South and Southeast Asian Studies, University of Madras, the participants included Prof Suryanarayanan; A. Antony Xavier, director (Technical), Coastal Aquaculture Authority, Government of India; Com R. Seshadri Vasan, head, Center for Asia Studies, Chennai; Ahilan Kadirgamar, senior lecturer, University of Jaffna, and member, Jaffna People’s Forum for Co-existence; U. Arulanandam, founder, Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen (ARIF) Trust and Fishermen Leader, Pamban; and Annalingam Annarasa, president, Jaffna District Fishermen Union Federation. T. Ramakrishnan, senior journalist, moderated the discussion. Sashi Nair, director, Press Institute of India, welcomed the gathering.
