A technical daylong programme for production executives and technical staff working in newspaper presses or associated with print production was conducted at PII-RIND on 24th July. The RIND seminar had four sessions that broadly focused on print production and operations.
After Sashi Nair, director, PII-RIND, welcomed the gathering, Prabhu Natrajan, research engineer, WAN-IFRA, explained to participants how to assess general print quality of newspapers, and the factors and metrics used to evaluate print quality using the industry-standard approach.
Taking the second session on behalf of S. Giridharan, executive director, Kapoor Imaging (who was not able to attend), Vigneshwaran Umapathy, factory manager, went through Giridharan’s presentation and highlighted the CTP plate options available for newspaper makers, comparing the significance and selecting the right one for the right purpose. From Kapoor Imaging, Sadiq Basha, product manager – pressroom chemicals, and regional manager (West), and Syed Abuthalib, manager – Prepress (Workflow), were also present to take questions.
Post-lunch, V.S. Narayanan, general manager – Technical, Dinamalar, traversed a broad spectrum relating to quality operations in newspaper presses. He presented short videos he had taken at drupa 2024 that showed how the print industry was now focused more and more on quality, sustainability, creativity and innovation. He emphasised that print packaging today was a major area of interest for printers worldwide; it was a field that young printers would do well to focus on instead of just looking at a future with newspaper presses.
T. Sakthikumaran, senior manager – Production, The Hindu Group, made a presentation on quality control mechanism, outlining the mechanism and methodology followed by the group that helped reduce print production waste.
Production executives from The Printers Mysore, Malayala Manorama, The Hindu and Technova, as also students from the Printing Department at Anna University attended.
